High-Availability Fleet Architecture™️
Redefining the Economics of Long-Endurance UAV Operations
For decades, long-endurance UAVs have been designed around a simple assumption: when the propulsion system requires inspection, servicing or repair, the entire aircraft is removed from service.
At ShadowfaxUAS, we questioned that assumption.
The result is High-Availability Fleet Architecture™️—our unique approach to designing and operating long-endurance UAV fleets. At the heart of this architecture is our patented Quick-Swap Propulsion Unit, which fundamentally changes the way propulsion maintenance is managed.
Rather than treating the propulsion system as a permanent part of the aircraft, Shadowfax separates the maintenance-intensive propulsion system from the mission aircraft. Routine propulsion maintenance can therefore be performed independently, while the aircraft itself remains available for operations.
The result is higher platform utilisation, greater fleet availability and a fundamentally more capital-efficient approach to delivering operational capability.
⸻
Maximising Fleet Availability
The propulsion system is typically the most maintenance-intensive subsystem on a long-endurance piston-powered UAV. Routine inspections, scheduled servicing, fuel-system maintenance, EFI diagnostics and component replacement all require time.
In conventional UAV architectures, these activities remove the entire aircraft—including its avionics, datalinks and mission payload—from operational service.
Enabled by our patented Quick-Swap Propulsion Unit, Shadowfax’s High-Availability Fleet Architecture™️ eliminates this dependency.
By allowing complete propulsion units to be exchanged in minutes, propulsion maintenance no longer dictates the availability of the mission aircraft. Operators can return aircraft to service immediately using a serviceable propulsion unit while maintenance is performed independently in the workshop.
The result is significantly higher fleet availability and improved utilisation of every aircraft within the fleet.
⸻
A More Capital-Efficient Fleet
Traditional fleet planning often requires operators to purchase additional complete UAVs simply to maintain operational readiness while aircraft undergo propulsion maintenance.
Shadowfax changes this equation.
Our High-Availability Fleet Architecture™️, enabled by the patented Quick-Swap Propulsion Unit, redefines the economics of long-endurance UAV operations by maximising utilisation of mission assets and reducing the fleet capital required to deliver operational capability.
Rather than investing in additional complete aircraft—each with duplicated airframes, avionics, datalinks and payload integration—operators can maintain fleet readiness through interchangeable propulsion units.
This allows more operational capability to be generated from the same capital investment.
⸻
Improved Reliability Through Better Maintenance
High reliability begins with high-quality maintenance.
Because propulsion maintenance is performed in a controlled workshop environment rather than on an operational aircraft in the field, technicians have better access, better working conditions and more time to perform inspections correctly.
Routine servicing no longer competes with operational pressure to return the aircraft to service as quickly as possible.
This encourages more thorough maintenance practices, improves quality control and supports long-term propulsion system reliability.
⸻
Maximising Operational Readiness
Operational success often depends on timing.
Whether responding to a developing security incident, launching during a favourable weather window or supporting a time-critical ISR mission, aircraft availability directly determines operational effectiveness.
Shadowfax’s High-Availability Fleet Architecture™️ ensures that routine propulsion maintenance no longer prevents an otherwise serviceable aircraft from flying.
When the mission demands immediate deployment, the aircraft is ready.
When favourable weather conditions appear, the opportunity can be exploited.
Higher aircraft availability translates directly into higher operational utilisation.
⸻
One Aircraft. Two Mission Profiles.
The benefits extend beyond maintenance.
On the SF25 platform, operators can exchange propulsion units to configure the aircraft for either electric or gasoline operation using the same mission aircraft.
Instead of purchasing separate electric and internal combustion UAVs, operators can configure a single aircraft for the mission at hand.
Quiet electric propulsion may be selected where acoustic signature is critical, while gasoline propulsion can be installed when maximum endurance is required.
One aircraft. Two propulsion systems. Maximum operational flexibility.
⸻
Designed Around Availability
Most UAV manufacturers optimise the aircraft.
Shadowfax optimises the fleet.
Our High-Availability Fleet Architecture™️ reflects a simple engineering philosophy: the most valuable mission assets should spend their time flying missions—not waiting for propulsion maintenance.
Enabled by our patented Quick-Swap Propulsion Unit, it allows operators to maximise fleet utilisation, improve operational readiness and deliver more capability from every capital investment.
